Video recorded few hours after I installed Grid. Drove the race with highest AI difficulty and had all driving aids disabled. Wasn't too easy to race though as it may look. It will be interesting to see how the multiplayer part is - haven't tried that yet.
AI is as AI always is: unpredictable and annoying. In Grid they randomly slow too much down when they shouldn't and have super powers (grip/acceleration) when they hit the grass or have some slides. The dynamic/adaptive AI should be banned from all racing/sporting games. I can't see the point in performing well, but then still have the AI catch up with you, and even worse, spit on your face when you make the slightest mistake by overtaking instantly. It also just looks plain wrong to do top speed and hit the rev limit.. and still being overtaken by an AI - the video doesn't show any of this, but I had an earlier one where I was leading with a huge gap. The AI managed to gain in on me within 3 high speed turns. I'm new to Grid, yes - but I wasn't that slow either.
Visually the game simply looks awesome. The damage model is cool. Collision sounds could become dull after a while IMO. I find the overall look to be catchy, yet a tad too colorful/fancy, which I think is a shame as it makes Grid appear less serious. I also had problems with seeing when AI were braking (lights).
The physics are better than expected but does have big downfalls. Handling is strange as the car wobbles a lot as if you are driving something worse than crap, but with tires glued to the track - and the collision model is off this world as it often causes the car to behave with severe under steer. I also found the side views to be pretty much worthless. There's a slight delay, and by the time the driver have turned the head, it doesn't matter any more - it's too slow - Codemasters wants us to be able to look back instantly, but are handicapping the feature that matters? Hm... yes, yes, I know - "Game doesn't show how final release will be.. yadda yadda".
I can see myself having lots of fun in this game, and I might even purchase it when it's launched, but I do hope that some of the issues gets resolved first though:
- handling/grip: Too wobbly
- steering: Had to turn off FFB, but steering is still odd because of the wobbling handling - you need to counter steer too often, fast and generally apply full lock to go anywhere.
- friction: When spinning and keeping on applying gas, a car does not regain grip. That a no no, Codemasters! Even when Grid isn't trying to be realistic (yes, you can spin al the way around, but you need to rape the car in order to do that).
- brakes: F1 brakes on steroids? Oh, come ooon! Grid have the potential to be more than a no-brainer racing game.
Final note: My openion on Grid is biased towards realism. As pure entertainment, I think Grid is pretty close to be spot on, although the AI tend to get on my nerves.
Anyways, enjoy...Tags / Keywords:
